Fishing for roach in the wilderness

Fishing Academy

January-February are rightfully considered the middle of the so-called deep winter - the time when frosty, calm weather is sometimes replaced by long blizzards. The thick ice of the reservoirs was covered with high snowdrifts. It is gloomy and uncomfortable under water. Very little oxygen comes from the atmospheric air, so oxygen starvation begins for most fish. And, as a result, there are deaths. They are especially destructive for small enclosed bodies of water.

During this period, the biting of many fish (bream, pike perch, pike and even the usually restless ruff) noticeably weakens. This is the off-season time when only a few anglers venture out onto the pond. And in vain ... Even in this seemingly bezleless time, you can successfully fish. But for this you need to know where and what to fish.

It is well known that the oxygen regime in rivers is much more favorable than in lakes, ponds, and reservoirs. This is due to several factors: later freeze-up, a large number of springs, and a current stirring the water. All this allows river inhabitants (including fish) to lead a more active lifestyle than in other places. This primarily concerns roach. Therefore, in the wilderness, it is necessary to adjust the tackle specifically for this fish.

You can catch roach both with a float rod and a jig. The main nozzle for fishing roach is a bloodworm. You can also use worms. Willingly takes this fish in the wilderness on the burdock moth.

If there is a strong current on the river, then a float rod should be preferred. Equipping it is a snap. You need to take a short fishing rod, fishing line with a diameter of 0.10-0.15 mm (preferably tinted to match the color of the water or the bottom), a small light float 3-5 centimeters long, which should be sunk with a sinker. At the end of the fishing line, a shot-sinker is attached, above which there is a 15-20 cm leash with hook No. 4 (see Fig. 1).

Practice shows that it is better to use two hooks: No. 4 on a short reins 6-7 centimeters from the lead, and 14-15 centimeters from it - the second No. 3-5. Why two hooks? Roach in winter more often takes from the bottom. Therefore, almost until the very end of winter, you can do with one crochet. But at the beginning of spring (usually in March), the roach becomes more active and begins to take bait even at half the water. Therefore, during this period, a second hook is needed.

On rivers in winter, fishing for roach with jigging tackle is quite successful. But only with a small current. Since the jigs are too small (and they are the most catchy), the current carries them away, and they quickly find themselves under the ice. A larger one is also not suitable: although it will be at the bottom, it can alert the fish. Therefore, it is extremely important to choose the best option: the strength of the current is the weight of the jig. It is well established that for fishing on the river, especially near algae, the shape and color of the jig are important. It can be assumed that they remind fish of the living creatures that they usually feed on: bugs, crustaceans, various larvae.

The amplitude of oscillations of the jig in winter should be minimal, and the frequency should be very high. And the most, perhaps, the most important thing: the jig must be slowly moved vertically near the bottom. It should be borne in mind that most often bites occur at the moment the jig detaches from the bottom and during its slow gliding descent.

The universal tackle for catching winter roach should be recognized as a hybrid of mormyshechny and float tackle, where instead of a float there is a nod. The main line is 0.2 mm, at its end there is a heavy sinker, and above it there are two leashes with a diameter of 0.1-0.15 mm with hooks. The length of the leashes is regulated by pieces of rubber, into which both the leash and the main line are passed (see Fig. 2).

In winter, roach bites are so careful that they should not be expected. It is necessary to react even to a slight movement of the float or a nod and immediately hook.

And although our great naturalist MM Prishvin argued: "Roach is a dreary fish", in the wilderness, when no fish is caught, this statement hardly matters. After all, it is not for nothing that folk wisdom says: "There is a fish for lack of fish and cancer." And even more so roach! So good luck to you anglers ...

Catching grayling in winter

Winter fishing for grayling is an exciting and rather adventurous activity, because this capricious fish cannot be found everywhere. Grayling prefer to settle in cold rivers with fast currents and clear water. Therefore, it makes no sense to go fishing to bodies of water located close to major highways and large cities. Fishing in winter is further complicated by the fact that this is a rather cunning fish, and it is not always possible to lure it.

Despite certain difficulties, many winter fishing enthusiasts are ready to go on a long journey to get grayling and enjoy its delicious meat. For the fishing to be successful, you need to prepare the tackle in advance, choose lures and baits and study the habits of this fish in the cold season.

Were today in Shilovka with a company of 6 people.
I caught 6 pieces, of which one gram is 600, the rest is 300-400 grams
Olex like 3 caught, also one medium and the other medium-sized
Viktorovich - 7th in my opinion, the size did not see
valter - 7-8 pieces, some not bad
sanekswarnoi - today for some reason caught only one
and friend Sanka - he also caught something and did not recognize

It didn't bite very much, mainly until 10 and after 3, they were and got brown enough, only there was not much sense. But the weather did not disappoint, everyone has red muzzles

Offtopic. Did the person in the jeep tell about the bottom relief? And I wondered where he had gone so quietly.

On this topic. I will not say that I am very pleased with the fishing. I caught 2 tails in the morning (approx. 600 and 400 g) and until 15 o'clock I did not see any more sticks. After I pulled out the last lace, the "Chinese" swooped down (c). As a result, they caught it, but I didn’t. Ice is thick, drilling evaporated. I didn't take pictures, because I was too lazy

Fishing rod equipment for roach fishing

To be successful in fishing, you need to properly rig your rod. The roach defines the fishing line well, so it should be chosen in a colorless color, the diameter of which will be equal to 0.12-0.17 millimeters. The hook also needs a small one. Note that stagnant lakes allow you to fish for roach as soon as the ice melts. The raft is well caught near steep banks. In early spring, roach bite is good, but short-lived, as spawning begins soon. After spawning, the fish, as a rule, diverge in different directions throughout the reservoir, however, it still prefers to adhere to thickets of vegetation and banks. This is where the most active roach bite begins, which continues until the onset of heat. In summer, roach can be found on the shallows, in thickets. In the sun, she hides in the shade.

The roach is located in the reservoir with some regularity, which is inherent in many fish: large individuals keep at the bottom, smaller fish at the surface. It is worth noting that fishing for roach with a float rod is often difficult, since the fish is very picky about the bait. Often the fisherman has to change the bait several times in order to please this capricious fish. In spring, roach is well caught by ant, worm and bloodworm. It is good to use a dragonfly larva or caddis flies at the beginning of summer. In the middle of summer - caddis and maggots. In the heat, you can fish on steamed grains of oats, barley and wheat. Small individuals can be caught with a grasshopper and a fly.

At a suitable chosen place, it is necessary to measure the depth, then make a couple of refunds at some interval (about 10-15 minutes), while each time you should change the distance of the hook relative to the bottom. In the event that there is no bite, then you should change the place. Note that in autumn and spring, a roach bite looks like this: the float instantly plunges under the water, which should be a signal for hooking. In the summer, in the heat, the bite is peculiar. A well-fed fish is hastily lacking bait. Often, especially in stagnant waters, the float will dip a little into the water and calm down, may lie on its side and shake shallowly. Such a bite does not accurately determine the appropriate hook time, which leads to an "empty" hook. Fishermen often use bait. In autumn and spring, it consists of chopped worms and bloodworms, and in summer you can use soaked semolina, steamed bran.

Fisherman - a magazine about fishing, personal experience of readers, advice from experienced fishermen. In winter, jig fishing is one of the most popular fishing destinations. Almost all types of fish can be caught with this bait, perhaps, with the exception of pike, although it is occasionally caught in the catch. So it is the jig that can be called the most versatile tackle. In short, it is perhaps the simplest one, especially for beginners.

Every year, ice appears on reservoirs at different times, but still, in most cases, at the beginning of the new year, it is already there. January is no longer the first ice, but it is not yet the wilderness. However, for fishing roach, this is quite a fertile time. On the first ice, as you know, linen takes sluggishly, it needs some time to adapt to new conditions.

It would seem that there is no fish in this hole, but it is worth lowering the smallest jig on the thinnest line and suddenly bites begin! Therefore, I believe that ultra-thin gear is not only a “lot of athletes”, but also a “lifesaver” for ordinary anglers. You just need to understand in what situations their use is justified, and what rules should be followed in order to avoid breaks and confusion.

The minimum set for catching spring bleak from ice looks like this: a piece of thin fishing line, the smallest pellet, a miniature hook on a thin wire and bait. By making a loop out of the fishing line and putting it on your finger, you can catch the bleak until your hand gets tired. At the same time, the bite is easy to determine visually, just by looking into the hole: under the ice you can clearly see how gambling fish flutter the bait.

The most active phase lasts about two weeks. Much of what has been said below, of course, is also suitable for fishing in closed reservoirs, but the individual characteristics of the reservoir will play a key role there. But the river, in my understanding, is an ideal training ground for a spinning player in May, allowing him to express himself and fully enjoy the delights of pike hunting.

The flood ends on the river, and the water gradually drops to its usual summer level. The period of falling water is the best time for fishing with bottom gear. True, it usually does not last long - at most two weeks. In other years, it happens that in the spring, large reserves of water accumulate in the Volgograd reservoir, and then they discharge it for a long time. In this case, a high level in the river can last until mid-June. The success of fishing very much depends on the rate of water falling in the Volga: the faster it leaves, the shorter the period of active biting. In high water, when coastal areas and sandbanks are flooded, fish will mix throughout the river, so finding its accumulation can be difficult.

And if, for example, chub and some other predators now feel great, and hunting for them is quite justified, then pike perch, pike and even perch are often capricious. And yet, it so happened that, going in the summer to a reservoir or a large pond, I usually hunted for pike perch. It turned out, of course, in different ways, but after years I realized that pike perch is the predator that can and should be caught in hot weather. In principle, the most catchy places for pike perch have been known for a long time and only slightly depend on the season.

At the height of summer, the best bait for rivers are wobblers, but not all, but the smallest, sometimes funny looking. They bear little resemblance to fry, but rather resemble beetles or tadpoles. However, this does not greatly affect the catchability. The main thing is the game and the sound effects incorporated into each model by the designers. The victorious procession of Minnow class wobblers in all fishing ratings is understandable - they catch large, trophy fish, perhaps more often than other lures. But this is for large bodies of water.

Fisherman - a magazine about fishing, personal experience of readers, advice from experienced fishermen. With the onset of autumn, as you know, most predators become noticeably more active and more supportive of our baits. But with the perch, everything is somewhat different. Without a doubt, hunting for him in the first half of autumn is interesting and promising, but it is, rather, a continuation of the August bite (perhaps even on an even larger scale). And already with the onset of October, the chances of catching a perch extravaganza sharply decrease.

Lures and food for carp fishing in winter

Despite the fact that the carp does not move too actively through the reservoir, it is still worth attracting its attention with the help of a bait. This will also help keep the fish close to the specific hole (Figure 7).

When choosing a bait for carp, consider the following recommendations:

  1. In the store, try not to choose products with a strong and pungent smell, as such aromas are more likely to scare away than attract fish.
  2. It is advisable to choose food with a medium fraction, since large particles will lead to quick saturation of the fish and it simply will not swallow the bait with a hook.
  3. For bait, you can use not only ready-made, but also home-made mixtures: boiled millet, ground wheat bread croutons, compound feed, bloodworms or cake.
Figure 7. Fish bite best on medium-sized lures

If you have already managed to feed the carp, it is time to choose the right bait for this fish. Bloodworms are considered to be a universal product, and most fish species, including carp, bite on them. But in this case, it should be borne in mind that not one larva will help to attract the attention of a large individual, but a whole bunch of 8-10 pieces, which can be connected to each other using a rubber ring.

Given this feature, the bloodworm nozzle can be supplemented with other feeds that are attractive specifically for carp. As additional bait, you can use pieces of worms, boiled barley, pieces of bread crusts or crumb, canned corn and peas, as well as boilies - special balls made from pressed feed that you can buy at the store.

In the video you can see what winter carp fishing looks like.

Fishing for roach in winter

Roach is considered a simple fish, catching which is not particularly difficult. In fact, this small fish can be very finicky, so fishers should carefully choose the tackle, bait and type of water for fishing (Figure 1).

Depending on the habits of aquatic inhabitants, winter fishing for roach is divided into several periods:

  1. First ice and 2 weeks after it: after the formation of the first ice on the surface, schools of fish move to those feeding places that they left in the fall. As a rule, during this period the fish feeds near the thickets of grass, directly in the thickets themselves and in the pits.
  2. Deafness: the period during which water bodies are covered with the thickest ice, and the oxygen concentration in the water decreases. This period peaks in January and February. Due to the lack of oxygen, the activity of the fish decreases, therefore, one cannot count on an active bite and a rich catch at this time.
  3. The last ice: this period occurs in late February and early March. With the arrival of the first thaws, the roach becomes more active and begins to feed intensively.
